How to Keep Your Skin Healthy this Summer: A Complete Guide
Summertime means—sunny days, poolside chats, beach outgoing, and sporting events for many of us. With the fun, we also added environmental stressors to our skin such as UV radiation and increased humidity. Here is a quick guide on how to get your skincare ready for summer:
- Hydration is important:
- Consider adding a hydrating facial mist to your skincare routine especially if poolside.
- Consider swapping your moisturizer (and cleansers) to a gel or foam based formula. Your skincare routine still needs a moisturizer especially if you’re using a retinol serum such as our Oathology Retinoath serum, so don’t skimp out on the moisturizer.
- Make sure to stay adequately internally hydrated as well.
- Exfoliate regularly
- If you aren’t already — consider adding a gentle exfoliating product to remove that dull dry skin. Generally, many dermatologists prefer chemical over physical exfoliation such as alpha hydroxy acid products (face washes, serums) vs harsh physical scrubs or brushes. Our Oathology TBH serum is packed with three different alpha hydroxy acids–glycolic, lactic, and mandelic acid.
- If you have been avoiding your retinol serums–this is the best time to bring them out. Our favorite? The coveted Oathology Retinoath® serum that can technically be used year round.
- Sun protection is non-negotiable.
- Seek shade: avoid direct sunlight during peak UV hours (10 am – 4 pm) if possible. Wear sun protective clothing including long sleeves, UPF sleeves, and sunglasses.
- Use sunscreen daily. Daily Sunscreen is still a must! We recommend a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a SPF of 30 or higher. Reapply every two hours especially if outdoors. Our favorite? Our sold out six times, Oathology Inzincable® sunscreen.
- Keep your skin and hair clean.
- Cleanse twice a day especially if you are wearing sunscreen. This can be done with a gentle cleanser, especially if you are using an exfoliating product such as our Oathology Retinoath or Oathology TBH serum.
- Rinse your skin and hair with cool water before and after jumping into a chlorine pool.
- Stay cool.
- If you suffer from melasma, staying cool is crucial to avoid further worsening of hyperpigmentation.
- Wearing breathable fabrics can help as can portable fans.
The key to gorgeous skin includes consistency and sticking to a routine. Take care of your skin this summer and your skin will thank you.
