How to minimize the appearance of enlarged pores
This is a question that comes up in clinic multiple times a day. Technically, the size of your pores cannot be changed–liken them to your shoe size. It is a size that is determined genetically and therefore cannot be changed. Additionally, pores cannot be open or closed. However we can help change the appearance of pores so they do not appear as enlarged and this is primarily done via exfoliation. The size of pores is primarily determined by genetics, skin type, and age, so it’s not possible to permanently change the size of your pores. However, there are several methods and skincare practices that can help minimize their appearance and keep them clean:
- Regular cleansing: Keeping your skin clean and free of dirt, oil, and makeup can prevent pores from becoming enlarged due to clogging. Look for a cleanser that is formulated for your skin type (e.g., oily, combination) to avoid over-drying or irritating your skin.
- Exfoliation: Regular exfoliation helps remove dead skin cells that can clog pores and make them appear larger. This can be done with chemical exfoliants like alpha hydroxy acids or vitamin A based treatments such as retinoids (like our Oathology Retinoath serum)or retinol alternatives like bakuchiol (like our Oathology TBH serum) , depending on your skin type.
- Topical treatments: Using products containing ingredients like niacinamide, retinoids (like retinol), or alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) can help improve skin texture and reduce the appearance of pores over time. Our Oathology TBH serum contains not only bakuchiol, but also niacinamide and a blend of three AHAs.
- Sulfur masks: Sulfur masks can temporarily tighten and minimize the appearance of pores by absorbing excess oil and impurities.
- Sun protection: Protecting your skin from sun damage with sunscreen can help prevent pores from becoming enlarged due to loss of skin elasticity. We recommend our highly coveted, Oathology Inzincable sunscreen here.
- Moisturize: Keeping your skin hydrated with a lightweight, non-comedogenic moisturizer can help maintain skin barrier function and prevent excess oil production, which can contribute to enlarged pores.
- Professional treatments: Certain dermatological treatments like chemical peels, microdermabrasion, or laser treatments can help improve skin texture and reduce the appearance of pores under the guidance of a dermatologist.
- Avoid pore-clogging products: Be mindful of using heavy, oily products or makeup that can clog pores and exacerbate their appearance. Opt for non-comedogenic and oil-free products when possible.
While these methods can help minimize the appearance of pores, it’s important to manage expectations as complete elimination or permanent change in pore size is not possible. Consistency is key when it comes to improving pore appearance. It may take several weeks to notice significant results, so be patient and stick to your skincare routine. If you have specific concerns or persistent issues with enlarged pores, consulting a dermatologist can help tailor a skincare regimen that suits your needs.
